Ammon Turnbow was born in the community of Alexander, Texas to James Thomas Turnbow and Elizabeth Jane (Hancock) Turnbow on September 12, 1897. He joined the Marine Corps in Dallas, Texas on June 7, 1918. He trained in Paris Island, SC before being sent to France August 27, 1918 as part of the 29th Company 5th Regiment. His death November 2, 1918, 9 days before the war ended resulted from being hit by German machine gun fire during the Meuse-Argonne battle, World War I.
