Clayton was born in Bethel, Maine, in 1814. He was the son of Cyrus Twitchell and Eunice Belknap.[1][2] In 1824, at approximately the age of 10, he and his family moved to Milan, New Hampshire.[3]
Clayton was a farmer and lumberman.[4][5] He served as selectman for the town of Milan, New Hampshire in 1848-49.[6] In 1848, he also served as a Justice of the Peace for Milan.[7] He served as selectman for Dummer, New Hampshire in 1853-5, '61-'63, '65-'68 and '71.[8] He served as Justice of the Peace for Dummer in 1864,[9] 1868[10] and 1870.[11]
He married Mary Phipps on February 23, 1834.[1][12] They lived in Milan until sometime between 1850 and 1853, as they were living in Milan in 1850[4] and Clayton first served as selectman of Dummer in 1853.[8] Their children included:[12][13]
Clayton died on December 5[2] or 6, 1877, in Milan, New Hampshire.[14] His gravestone has inscribed the date of December 6, while his death record lists December 5. He is buried in Hillcrest Cemetery, in Milan.[14]
