Gilman was born in 1802 in Bethel, Maine. He was the son of Cyrus Twitchell and Eunice Belknap, natives of Dublin, New Hampshire.[1][2] In 1824, his parents and siblings moved to Milan, New Hampshire, and it is very likely Gilman came with them.[3]
On November 14, 1831, in Milan, New Hampshire, he married Lucy Harris.[4] They lived in Milan[5] and later Dummer, New Hampshire.[6] Their children included:[7]
Gilman was a farmer and a blacksmith.[5][6] He served as town clerk of Milan in 1833, and again in 1843 to 1845. He served as selectman of Milan in 1833.[8] He served as town clerk and treasurer of Dummer in 1856; as selectman in 1859; as town clerk in 1863; and as treasurer in 1864.[9] He was a town representative in 1861 to 1863, when Dummer was classed with Stark.[10] He served as County Commissioner of Dummer from 1864 to 1866.[11]
He died on March 17, 1867.[12][2] His death record, which was made in 1905, lists his date of death as March, 1866, and lists the location as Dummer.[13] He is buried in Hillcrest Cemetery in Milan.[12]
