James was born 14d 12m 1784 [14 Dec 1784].[1] He was the son of Abraham and Phebe Underhill.[2]
He married first Lydia Carpenter, daughter of Daniel and Leah Carpenter, on 15d 2m 1804 [15 Feb 1804].[2]
He married second, Lydia's sister Tamar Carpenter.[citation needed] He was disowned by the Amawalk Monthly Meeting in 1828 for "marrying contrary to discipline."[3]
