Biography

This is the profile for the wife of Thomas Chasse who had a son named Aquila who was baptized in Woolverstone in 1620.

Name; Parentage; Date and Place of Birth

The name, parentage and place of birth of Thomas Chasse's wife are unknown. Based on the estimated date of birth of her presumed eldest child (1618), she was probably born sometime in 1593-1598, with about 1595 being a reasonable midpoint estimate.

Two marriage records have been found, either of which may relate to the marriage of Thomas Chasse and his wife:

  • Thomas Chase married Elizabeth Johnson, servant to Mr. Giles, on September 23, 1614 at St. Andrew, Impington, Cambridgeshire (60 miles from Woolverstone)[1]
  • Thomas Chase married Elz Turner in 1616 at Stuston, Suffolk (30 miles from Woolverstone)[2]

It is therefore possible that the name of the wife of Thomas Chasse was Elizabeth Johnson or Elizabeth Turner, with the latter being more likely due to a date more consistent with the date of birth of Thomas's eldest child (say 1618) and a location closer to Woolverstone.

Marriage and Children

Based on the estimated date of their presumed eldest child (1618), Thomas Chasse and his wife were probably married about 1617. Their place of marriage is unknown. No record of the marriage is contained in the Woolverstone parish register, so it is unlikely that they were married there. As discussed above, it is possible that the record of a marriage of Thomas Chase to Elizabeth Johnson in 1614 at Impington, Cambridgeshire or the record of the marriage of a Thomas Chase to Elizabeth Turner at Stuston, Suffolk relate to the marriage of Thomas Chasse and his wife.

Thomas and his wife probably had the children listed below. Only the baptismal record for son Aquila has been found. As found in the Woolverstone parish register, it reads as follows:

Aquila ye sonne of Thos Chasse was bap. ye 7th of January[3]

As discussed in the profile for Aquila Chase, son Aquila was probably Aquila Chase the New England immigrant. Thomas Chasse's parentage of a son named Thomas is based on the fact that Aquila Chase the New England immigrant had a brother Thomas who is thought to have beenwas probably born a few years earlier.

  1. Thomas, b. say 1618 presumably somewhere in England, m. about 1642 Elizabeth Philbrick in Hampton, Massachusetts Bay Colony, d. before October 5, 1652 in Hampton, Massachusetts Bay Colony. (See discussion and sources in Thomas' profile.)
  2. Aquila, bpt. January 7, 1619/20 in Woolverstone, m. about 1645 Anne Wheeler in Hampton, Massachusetts Bay Colony, d. about December 21, 1670 in Newbury, Massachusetts Bay Colony. (See discussion and sources in Aquila's profile.)

Residency in Woolverstone

Bases on the fact that there are no records of Thomas or any other Chasse (or variant spelling) in Woolverstone prior the baptismal record of his son Aquila in January 1619/20 and there is no baptismal record in Woolverstone for Thomas' presumed older son Thomas, who was probably born about 1618, Thomas and his wife probably moved to Woolverstone about 1619. Based on her burial record there, she presumably resided in Woolverstone from about 1619 until her death.

Death and Burial

Thomas Chasse's wife was buried in Woolverstone on December 12, 1624. Her burial record reads as follows:

The wyfe of Thomas Chasse buried 12 of December[4]

There's actually more information about this woman on the profile for her husband, Thomas Chasse (Chasse-196). Can the same information about the 2 registers that suggest her marriage to Thomas be put on this profile as well.

Also, on the profile for Chasse-196, it seems that while we don't know which surname she has at birth, it appears that her first name was Elizabeth. Please, can we give her the dignity of at least one name, especially since woman so easily get lost in genealogical records? It might encourage people in finding our more about her, as well

I added a discussion of the two possible marriage records. However, since it is quite possible that neither of them relate to the marriage of Thomas Chasse and his wife, it is speculative to assume that her name was Elizabeth. No dignity in giving her a first name that may well be incorrect. Giving her a first name might also discourage research into records with a different first name.

Thank you for adding the 2 records of the possible marriage. I do see your point about her name being less certain than Thomas Chasse's,
