Elizabeth (maiden name unproven) Angell (likely born before 1735) was the second wife of Charles Philpott. The given named of her first husband is unknown. The Angell family lived in neighboring St. Mary’s County. Unfortunately, many of the early records of St. Mary’s County have been lost.
Probably about July 1752, Elizabeth Angell married Charles Philpott of Charles County, Maryland. Elizabeth had a minor daughter, Mary Angell, who, evidently, had been bequeathed a slave. In a "Deed of Gift" dated 14 July 1752, Charles ensured that Elizabeth’s daughter, Mary, would inherit the slave when she came of age:
This deed implies that Elizabeth had more than one daughter, and proves that her youngest daughter, Mary, had not yet reached the age of 16. The deed was recorded at the request of Joseph Thompson on 1 August 1752. It is known that Joseph Thompson had a sister named Elizabeth who married a man named Angell, but Elizabeth’s information does not quite fit the known information about Joseph’s sister. [2] It is likely that Elizabeth was related to the Thompson family, but her exact relationship has not been proven.
There is also a possibility that Elizabeth had a child by Charles Philpott, and named her "Anne".[3] Again, this has not been proven. If true, Elizabeth may have married again after Charles’ death, to a man named Taylor. More research is needed.
Charles Philpott died, intestate, by 12 November 1753. Elizabeth was the administratrix of his estate when an inventory was recorded on 2 February 1754.[4]
As Charles’ widow, Elizabeth was entitled to one-third of her husband’s estate. In 1753, Charles’ son John, and nephew Benjamin had requested a re-division of the Philpott lands. As a result, 308 acres of land, known as Walker’s Run, ended up in the possession of Benjamin Philpott, but Elizabeth had right of dower to one-third of the land. On 28 November 1757, Benjamin sold his share of the 308 acres to James Campbell, a merchant.[5] On the same day, Elizabeth leased her one-third share of the land to James Campbell.[6] Both deeds were recorded in May 1758.
Elizabeth died after 28 November 1757. The place of her burial is unknown.
