Private Hiram Van Guilder was born in 1836 in Lorain County, Ohio, United States, son of Tobias Van Guilder (~1810–<1841) and Ann Youry (1815– ).

In 1850, Hiram (13) was living in Eaton, Lorain with his sister, Olive Van Guilder (12); and Phidelia Urias (8), Emily Urias (7), Teale Urias (5), and Sarah Urias (0). [1]

On 31 Jul 1862, he enlisted as a Private in Company H of the 103rd Regiment, Ohio Infantry. [2]

He was captured at Dandridge, Tennessee and sent to Andersonville Prison, where he died of disease (aged 27) on August 1, 1864. He was buried at the Andersonville National Cemetery. He was buried in Andersonville National Cemetery, Andersonville National Historic Site, Macon County, Georgia.
