Biography

Charlotte Varlow (aka Barlow) was born in about 1814 in Boston, Lincolnshire, England.

Charlotte Varlow married John Green on 3 May 1833 in Sutterton, Lincolnshire.^[1]

Charlotte and John had five children:

1. Henry Edward Green (1833-1892) [Varlow given as mother's surname and transcription notes that X in margin suggested illegitimate son of Charlotte Varlow]^[2]
2. Alfred Green (1835-1918)
3. Mary Ann (Green) Mitchell (1838-)
4. Susan Green (c1840-)
5. John Thomas Green (1841-1902)

In 1841 Charlott Green (age 25-29) lived at Thread Needle Street in Kirton, Lincolnshire with her husband John (25-29, Joiner) and four children: Henry (8), Alfred (6), Mary Ann (3), and Susan (1) - they lived in the household of William Wileman.^[3]

In 1851 Charlotte Green (age 39, Carpenter's Wife) - with her daughter Mary A (13) and son John T (10, Scholar) - were lodgers at West Street in Boston, Lincolnshire in the household of Henry Bingham.^[4]

In 1861 Charlotte Green (age 47) lived at 17 Hamilton Terrace in London with her husband John (49, Carpenter Journeyman) and two sons: Alfred (25, Carpenter Journeyman) and John T (19, Carpenter Journeyman).^[5]

In 1871 Charlotte Green (age 60, Housekeeper) lived in Mile End Old Town, London with her son Henry E (38, Retired Builder), grandson Henry E (1), granddaughter Ellen E (14, Scholar), and servant Sarah Bryant (17, Domestic Servant).^[6] Charlotte's husband John (56, Carpenter) was staying with their daughter Mary Ann Mitchell (33, Dressmaker) and her children in Mile End Old Town.

Charlotte's husband passed away before 1881.

In 1881 Charlotte Green (age 69) lived at 201 Burdett Rd in Mile End Old Town with her son Henry (49, Builder Employing 3 Men & 1 Boy), daughter-in-law Emma (25), and four grandchildren: Henry E (11, Scholar), William J (4, Scholar), Herbert T (0), and Allice (5, Scholar), as well as servant Louisa Chester (17, Domestic Servant).^[7]

In 1891 Charlotte Green (age 80, Living On Own Means) lived at Burdett Road in Mile End with her son Henry E (59, Builder Out of Work), daughter-in-law Emma (34), and four grandchildren: William (13, Scholar), Herbert (10, Scholar), Alice (15, Scholar), and Florence E (3), as well as servant Anna Claxton (24, General Servant).^[8]

Charlotte Green passed away in 1898, aged 84 years. Her death was registered in Mile End in the first quarter of the year.^[9]
