Mary Varnum was born about 1812 in Peacham, Caledonia, Vermont, the daughter of John and Mary (Morse) Varnum based on her age (78) at death.[1]
Mary S. Varnum (aged about 18) married first to Josiah Dana 2nd on 15 April 1830 in Peacham.[2] Josiah Dana was born in Peacham on 05 October 1807, the son of Elijah and Betsey (Barrett) Dana.[3]
Josiah Dana died, aged 37 years, on 12 September 1845 and was buried in the Peacham Cemetery.[4][5] No probate records have been found for Josiah's estate in Caledonia County. Elijah Dana of St. Johnsbury wrote his will, dated 28 August 1850 and proved 05 January 1864, in which he named his wife Polly; son Charles Dana of Illinois; daughter Almira, wife of Moses Martin of Peacham; three grandchildren (unnamed) of his deceased son Josiah Dana.[6]
On 02 December 1847, Mrs. Mary Dana and Seneca Ladd were married at Peacham by minister David Merrill.[7]
In September 1850, Seneca and Mary Ladd were enumerated in the census in Danville. Seneca was aged 48, a blacksmith born in Canada East. Mary was aged 38, born in Vermont. The children were Ira, age 13, Adalade, age 4, Charles, age 2. It is apparent that the first two children were Seneca's by his first wife. Also in the home were two children from Mary's first marriage, Frank Dana age 15, and Julia A. Dana, age 10. All the children were born in Vermont.[8]
In June 1860, Seneca and Mary Ladd were enumerated in the census in Danville. Seneca was aged 58, a blacksmith born in Vermont. Mary was aged 48, born in Vermont. Their children were Charles, age 11, Eddy age 4, and Julia Dana age 19, a daughter from Mary's first marriage.[9]
Seneca Ladd, a blacksmith, died 16 Oct 1868 at Danville of Phthisis aged 66y7m2d [b. Jan 1802], b. Danville to James & Mary Ladd.[10]
In 1870, Mary Ladd was living with her son Edwin H. Ladd (age 14) in the same household as her son-in-law John C. Colby & daughter Julie A. Colby in Danville.[11]
In 1880, Mary Ladd was living alone in Danville, aged 67.[12]
Mary Varnum Ladd, a widow, died on 06 April 1890 in Danville, Vermont, aged 78 of "quick consumption."[1] Mary was buried with her first husband, and her second husband's name was given on her gravestone in the Peacham Cemetery.[13]
Mary S. Ladd wrote her at Danville, dated 06 March 1890 and probated 03 May 1890, in which she named her daughter Julia A. McLean (executrix and heir), sons Charles D. Ladd, Edwin H. Ladd and Elijah V. Dana. She left a bequest to the four children (unnamed) of Franklin V. Dana. Witnesses were Fred J. Frye, Benj. C. Badger and J.B. Mattocks.[14]

Different, easily confused couple:
Seneca Ladd, a farmer age 23 born [ca, 1846] in Canaan to Zorastus & Eleanor Ladd, of Peacham married Mary S. Varnum on 20 Jun 1869 in Peacham.[21]
On June 20, 1869, Seneca Ladd of Peacham married Mary S. Varnum of Peacham. He was a farmer age 23 born in Canaan to Zoroaser & Eleanor Ladd. She was age 19, born Peacham to Charles & Betsey Varnum. It was a first marriage for both. P.B. Fisk, minister, officiated.[22]
