Biography

Born on the Vineyard Ranch at "Lone Tree" near Smartsville, CA. Affectionately referred to as "Lyddie" by her father, who named her after his sister who died young and is buried on the same property where she was born.

Mother of 8 children, teacher to many. Taught at North Bloomfield schoolhouse the couple of years her family lived there in the early 1900s (when husband Percy became a ranger for the U.S. Forest Service.) Longest teaching experience was running an a one room schoolhouse called Blue Tent School outside of Nevada City, CA from 1921 - 1948. Nicknamed "Teach" by Italian immigrant students there who were learning English, and picked up by the other students, the name stuck with her the rest of her life.

Lydia married Elmer Percy Gleason on 26 June 1901 in San Francisco, California.^[1][2]

She passed away 7 October 1966 in Nevada City, California.^[3]
