John Wadkins was born in 1837 in Kentucky, United States, son of Thomas Malone Wadkins Jr. (1813 - 1895) and Lucinda (Howard) Wadkins (1817 - 1855).

In the 1850 census the family was in Floyd, Kentucky. The grandfather lived next door. His parents are illiterate and his father has no occupation but most likely he farmed to support the family. They are very poor - they own no real estate and census takers only list wealth over $100. [1]

John (~19) married Louanna Barnett (~18) (born in Kentucky about 1838) on 11 Dec 1856 in Floyd, Kentucky[2].

In the 1860 census John (age 21) was in Magoffin, Kentucky. His father lives close by.[3]
