Judith was born in February of 1804 in Fauquier County, Virginia. She is the wife of Samuel Flinn (also spelled Flynn). She is listed with her husband and six children (records indicate they likely had at least nine children) on the 1850 Census.[1] Her husband passed away in 1852 and she is listed as widowed on the 1860 Census[2] the 1870 Census[3] and the 1880 Census.[4] She passed away in February of 1888 at the age of 83.[5]
Judith Kirk Wale
From Elizabeth Gordon — recollections
Judith Kirk Wale was born February 27, 1804 in Culpepper county, Virginia near Stevensburg. She married to Samuel Flinn, son of Daniel and Mary Howard Flinn, on April 4, 1825 at the house of her brother George in Stevensburg.
Samuel Flinn was a widower, his first wife, having been Mildred Frances Hill of Culpepper county, her father, the father of Flinn, and they Mr. Joyce came from Ireland together when they were boys.
The marriage was solemnized on Easter Monday. One of the brothers opposed this marriage, and it was hurried slightly because of that. Her wedding dress was a white mull Muslin.
Aunt Mildred told me that grandma and grandpa were engaged before he was married at all, but there was a misunderstanding of some sort, and although her wedding clothes were made, they were not married then. He sometime later, married Miss Mildred Hill, who lived about a year. They did not see each other for a long time, but met that Easter Sunday at church and had a talk and were married the next day. She wore the same dress she had meant to wear when they were engaged before.
This couple had 10 children of whom more will be mentioned later in the letter.
When Judith Kirk and Samuel Flinn were married, he took her to his home, where he had been living with his mother, and which was about 3 miles east of Stevensburg, Virginia. They lived together as long as his mother was alive, which was until January 17, 1836. When Flinn was an infant, she died.''
Research by Wm. Maxwell Bowers states Judith married Samuel Flinn (the son of Daniel and Mary Howard Flinn) of Culpepper, VA,. He was a widower, his first wife having been Mildred Frances Hill of Culpeper Co., VA. "Her father, the father of Samuel Flinn and a Mr. Joyce, came from Ireland together when they were boys. Samuel Flinn and Judith Wale "were married on April 1, 1825, Easter Monday at the house of her brother George in Stevensburg. This couple had ten children ..." After they were married, Samuel took her to "his home where he had been living with his mother, which was about 3 miles east of Stevensburg. His mother died in Warrenton, Fauquier Co., VA. " Further notes state, " His mother died Jan 17, 1836, when Mary Flinn was an infant."
Extract from letter of Sue Flinn: When Grandma (Judith Kirk) knew uncle Joe was joining the Union army she told him she never wanted to see him again. He did not write to her or go near her for twenty seven years. He came while we were there. I did not know that until I visited his widow in 1923. ... He carried a bullet in his hip from the war. It finally caused paralysis and killed him.
