Annie was born in 1875. She was the daughter of William Welby and Mary Taylor. She was baptised on 12 April 1875 in Sulgrave, Northamptonshire, England.^[1]

In the 1881 census Annie (age 5, Scholar) was living with her parents and siblings in High St, Wheatley, Oxfordshire, England. Her father was a grocer. ^[2]

Annie married Herbert Henry Lambert (a soldier) on 28 December 1897 in Oxford, St Philip and St James, Oxfordshire, England.^[3]

In the 1901 census Annie (age 26) was living with her parents, sister and a young daughter in Oxford, Cowley St John, Oxfordshire, England. Another 2 young children recorded in the household may be the children of her sister. Annie's husband is not recorded in the household (perhaps away with the military as he was a soldier?), Annie is recorded as unmarried but this is presumably an error as she appears with the surname Lambert and there is a matching marriage record from a few years earlier. ^[4]

Annie's husband petitioned her for divorce in 1916, he alleged that she had committed adultery with a man named Alfred Bywell.^[5]
