18 Jun 1838, James Welch, Jr.'s will dated 10 April 1838 is probated naming children; William, David, Wiley, Jimerson, John G., Henry J., Permelie Jane, Frank P., Isham B., and Jesse B. Bequests are given to Wm., David, W.P., Jimerson, and John. The remainder of the estate is divided; one-third and a negro girl named Milley to Mahala with the balance divided equally among James' heirs. Upon Mahala's death, her share is to be divided equally among the heirs. His wife, Mahala, is named as guardian of the minor heirs; Henry, Franklin, Isham, Jesse, and John. The "stock of hogs to be used towards raising the minor heirs" Mahala and James' son, William, are named as executors. Elijah Rogers and Seth Corley were executors.   • From Robert A. Edwards, 17 Mar 1998; ... they (could have) moved between Oct 14th and Nov 19th,1850...(or)...they could have lived near the boundary or border of neighboring townships. Sometimes the township boundary was a road. The west side would be one township, the east side would be the other township. Since the census takers were paid by the "head", they sometimes canvassed both sides of the road or simply added people they knew or knew of to the rolls so they could make more money. When this happened, the information provided was usually inaccurate. If they did move and were counted twice, why the differences? The informant(s)... what if Dad gave the information one time and mom gave it the other time...

8 Oct 1862, John G. Welch received the sum of $20 from the treasurer for five days service attending County Court. (Minutes of Commissioners Court, Kerr County Courthouse, Kerrville, TX)

1862-1865, John G. Welch lived several years in Old Mexico where he was in charge of a mine for Charles Shriner of Kerrville. Sometime before or during the Civil War they all joined the Boxer Colony that went to Mexico in search of mining interests. He and other fathers with their families joined a colony heading for Durango, Mexico, a rich agricultural and mining area. Sons, James, age 19, Wiley, age 12, and Joshua, age 9, were part of that group. (Stella Welch Bennett through Willard Welch, July 1998)

He signed his name to the ballot, and rolled it up like a candle and put it on the table, the big end down. About one hundred people voted."
