Handed down history from Mary's granddaughter, Mrs. Strausie McCaslin Hutcheson stated the following:

"Mary was the daughter of Jacob & Sarah Carothers Wells. Jacob was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth Slemp/Slimp Wells. Both grandparents were originally from VA. but moved to KY."

"Her mother, Sarah Carothers, was the daughter of James and Mary 'Meg' Smith Carothers."-(d 1800). Further research indicates that during the Revolutionary War James served in Capt. John Nelson's company in the 4th North Carolina Regiment commanded by Col. Thomas Polk from 1776-1779. James fought in the Battles of Brandywine and Monmouth.

Mary married Christian in 1841.
