Biography

Stella Caliste Wells was born on 26 January 1886^[1] in Ponchatoula, Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana, United States.^[2] She was the daughter of Flavius Josephus Wells and Mertie Cate Threeton. She was enumerated in Ponchatoula with her parents and sibling during the 1900 census.^[3]

Caliste married Lucius Tyler Alford, son of John M. Alford and Sara Tyler, on 19 October 1909 in Hammond, Tangipahoa Parish.^[4] They were enumerated together in her father's household in Ponchatoula during the 1910 census, when she was employed as a department store clerk.^[5]

They had one child:

1. Fay Louise Alford (1913-2000)

During the 1920 census, Caliste and Lucius had their own household. Her parents were living with them through at least 1930.^[6][7] Her mother died in 1935, and her father died about two years later. By 1940, their married daughter and her husband and son lived with them in their home on Fourth Street. ^[8] The 1950 census showed that Lucius was owner-manager of a retail grocery, but by then he did not seem to be working full time in the business.^[9]

Apparently after a long illness, Lucius died in 1951, leaving Caliste widowed at age 65.^[10][4] Caliste died 20 years later, on 21 July 1972, at the hospital in Hammond.^[2][1] She was buried beside her husband at Wetmore Cemetery in Ponchatoula.^[11]

   ALFORD, MRS. STELLA CALISTE

   Died at 4 p.m. Friday at Seventh Ward General Hospital in Hammond. She was 86, a native and resident of Ponchatoula. Body will be at First United Methodist Church after 1 p.m. Saturday. Religious services at 4 p.m. Saturday at the church, conducted by Rev. Jerome Cain. Burial in Wetmore Cemetery under the direction of Harry McKneely and Son Funeral Home in Ponchatoula. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Jimmy (Fay) Sellers, of Ponchatoula, two grandchildren and a great grandchild. Pallbearers are Dr. Glenn T. Scott Jr, Myles Griggs, Bobby Tucker, Joseph Sellers Jr., E. P. Guitreau and Raymond Pond. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Friendly Circle Sunday School Class or Woman's Society of Christian Service of the First United Methodist Church.
