"Daniel West Settler, Bloomfield Road, Lower Hutt. Born in Croyden, Surrey, in 1822, Mr. West is one of the few old settlers remaining who arrived in Port Nicholson by the ship “Martha Ridgway” in 1840. After a short time in Wellington and some years in the Chatham Islands, the subject of this notice settled the Hutt Valley in 1857. He has witnessed the development of settlement in the district, and for many years took part in the dairy industry, having a farm of thirty-five acres in the Waiwetu." "A social function of an interesting character took place at the Lower Hutt last evening, when Mr. and Mrs. Daniel West celebrated their golden wedding. The couple over whose heads so many summers have passed were married in Wellington on the 22nd March, 1842, and took up their residence in the Chatham Islands soon afterwards. They lived there for a number of years, their chief articles of food whilst on the islands consisting of potatoes and pork. Residence there was not of the most pleasant description, and the couple returned to Wellington 36 years ago, and ever since they have been living at the Hutt. Mr. West is 70 years of age, his wife being 71, and both are hale and hearty. There have been no children." Source: Evening Post, Volume XLII, Issue 69, 22 March 1892.
