Lieut Col John West, son of Anthony West and his wife, Ann, was born in 1638 and died May 27, 1702. He married Matilda Scarburgh, who died Jan 3, 1721.

His will was filed in Northampton County in 1703, and in it he mentions his children by name. He gave his three daughters, Matilda, Mary, and Jean, the "ridge land without the neck where son Anthony lives." He devised to his son, Benoni, one-half of "Deep Creek Mill," and the other half of this mill he gave to his three sons, John the elder, John the younger, and Jonathan. He mentions some of this grand children and names his wife, Matilda, executrix.

Matilda West daughter of Lieut Col John West and Matilda Scarburgh was born in Accomac County Virginia and died there in 1722. She married Hon John Wise who died in 1717. They were the parents of Mary Cade Wise and John Wise whose descendants are fully traced in a Wise Family book by Hon Jennings Cropper Wise.

Mathilda's birth date is uncertain, but she was born in Accomack County, Virginia probably about 1680, one of twelve children of John West and his wife Matilda Scarburgh. Mathilda West married John Wise, also of Accomack County, ^[4] They were the parents of six children, all named in the wills of both John, who died in 1717, and Mathilda, who died in the winter of 1721-22. The children were Mary Cade, John, Thomas, Elizabth, Samuel, and Hannah Scarburgh. ^[5]
