John Wesley Wheeler was born on 11 Apr 1839 in Ohio.[1] He was the son of Jesse Wheeler and Elizabeth (Edgar) Wheeler. At the time of the 1850 Census he was living in Findlay, Hancock County, Ohio, where his father worked as a carpenter.[2]
At the time of the 1860 Census he was still living with his family in Findlay, and was working as a clerk.[3]
He joined the 21st Ohio Infantry Regiment (3 months) on 20 Apri 1861. He was appointed as a Sergeant with Company F on 27 Apr 1861. He mustered out with his company on 12 Aug 1861 upon the completion of their three months enlistment.[4]
He then joined the 57th Ohio Infantry Regiment on 09 Oct 1861. He was appointed as 1st Lieutenant of Company G on 04 Jan 1862. On 31 Dec 1862 he was promoted to Captain and took command of Company B.[5]
He was discharged on 28 Mar 1864 at Cincinnati, Ohio, on a Surgeon's Certificate of Disability.[6]
He applied for an invalid's pension on 14 Oct 1879.[7]
He married Flora Ann Rogers on 25 Apr 1885 in Montgomery County, Kansas.[8] Together they had at least the following children:[9][10][11]
At the time of the 1900 Census he was living in Little Caney Township, Chautauqua County, Kansas. His wife was deceased, and he had four children living with him at home. He was working as a farmer.[9]
A 1907 Veteran's Pension Payment card indicates he had chronic bronchitis and a disease of the eyes.[12]
At the time of the 1910 and 1920 Censuses he was living in Caney Township, Montgomery County, Kansas.[13][14]
He passed away on 15 Mar 1921 in Montgomery County, Kansas. He was buried at Havana Cemetery, Havana, Montgomery County, Kansas.[1]
