Biography

1776 Project
Captain Isaac Wheeler served with Vermont Republic Militia during the American Revolution.

Isaac Wheeler is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A123901.

Isaac was born on about 14 April 1754 in Concord, Middlesex Co MA. He was the son of Jonas Wheeler Sr. and Persis (Brooks) Wheeler.

Revolutionary War Record (from pension record #S6374)

Isaac volunteered April 1775 and marched under Lt. Hale to Concord and then to Cambridge and severed about 3 weeks as private. Then enlisted and served as a private in Captain Adam Wheeler's Co, Col Doolittle's MA Reg. Attached a British schooner that had run aground in Boston Harbor and had quite a skirmish. He was in the Battle of Bunker Hill and served 6 months.[1]

He moved to VT. In 1777 when Burgoyne attached Ticonderoga, he volunteered and served as a private in Captain Wells' Co, marched to Hubbardton, was in a skirmish at Castleton and served 10 days.

He was commissioned Feb 1781 Ensign in Captain Moore's Co. 1st VT Militia and served about 3 months, was commissioned Mar 1781 Captain of Wilmington Co, 7th VT Militia.

When Isaac was 24 he married Miriam Rugg on 4 February 1779 in Wilmington, Vermont[2].

The couple had 5 children:

  • Carolina Metilda b. 12 Nov 1779
  • Isaac b. 14 Mar 1782; d. 22 Mar 1782
  • Moses b. 11 Mar 1783
  • Origan b. 19 Aug 1786
  • Miriam b. 25 Sept 1791

Lived in Wilmington VT - 14 years[3]; Benson, Rutland Co, VT - 15 years[4]; Columbia, Bradford Co, PA 12 years; and then moved to Charleston, Tioga Co, PA[5] [6]

Isaac died at the age of 78 on 26 February 1833 in Charleston, Charleston Township, Tioga, Pennsylvania, United States.[7]
