Some census entries list him as "Loften" not "Loftin."
He came with his family to Lafayette County, Missouri in 1842, and gained possession of the family farm after his father died in about 1858.
He fought in the Civil War for the Confederacy, taking leave to attend to his sick brother, who died, but he never returned to the War.
He and his mother went to Illinois in the mid-1860s, then returned to the farm. His sister kept house for him until about 1880, then she returned to Kansas City. He never married, chosing to "bear the ills he has than to fly to those he knows not of."
