Biography

Anna G. White (Annie) was born June 14, 1860 in Michigan. She was the daughter of Amos White and Clarissa Tryon.

The family lived in Leonidas Twp., St. Joseph, Michigan. Her siblings included Elizabeth, Mahala, Barak, Betsey, Druzilla and Emily.

Name Sex Age Occupation Birth Place

Clarrissa White F 40 New York
Mahala White F 18 Michigan
Barrack White M 14 Michigan
Betsey White F 10 Michigan
Drusilla White F 7 Michigan
Emily White F 2 Michigan
Angenet White F 9/12 Michigan
Pater Tryon M 77 New York

Annie married John Wesley Kimbel, presumably before November 1876, because Annie is listed as the mother on stepdaughter Lilly Kimbel’s death certificate.

Annie and John’s two children were:

  • Unnamed stillborn daughter (1878)
  • John Wesley Kimbel Jr. (Wesley) 1879-1970.

Annie was also the stepmother to John’s two children from his prior marriage to Margaret E. Hissong. They were Lilly M. (1871-1876) and George Lee Kimbel (1873-1929).

By June 8, 1880, when the census was enumerated at their home, John and Annie were living in Leonidas with their son John Jr. (Wesley). This entry appeared between those for the households of Amos White and Barak White.

The next entry after Barak White listed the home of Daniel and Elizabeth (Cole) Kimbel. John’s son George was living there with his grandparents.

Annie died on Sept. 28, 1880 in Leonidas, St. Joseph, Michigan, and was buried in Leonidas Cemetery.

Research Notes

  • The 1860 US Census for the Amos White’s household in Leonidas, St. Joseph, Michigan, shows a child Angenet whose age looks like 1/12 and that the census was enumerated on June 8, 1860. Other records indicate that Annie was born in June 14, 1860. More research is needed to clarify.
  • A newspaper obituary for Annie’s sister Druzilla Whitehead, says she was the last of 8 sisters and 1 brother.
  • More research is needed to locate a marriage record for John Wesley Kimbel and Anna G. White. Michigan is the most likely location.
  • Lilly M. Kimbel’s death record shows Annie White as her mother. The year of Lilly’s birth, and the grave stone inscription “dau. Of J&M Kimbel” indicates that Lilly is more likely the daughter of John’s first wife Margaret.
