James was born in Northbridge, Massachusetts, in 1814, the son of Paul and Betsey (Fletcher) Whitin.[1] He was a member of the Whitin family that was at one time one of the world's largest producers of textile spindles for picking and spinning cotton and wool. His father Paul owned several cotton mills, and James eventually followed in the business, inheriting the Crown and Eagle Mill in Uxbridge, Mass., as well as land near the Whiten Railroad Depot from his mother in 1864. He in 1874, James built the Linwood Cotton Mill on that land. He married Patience Saunders in 1842[2]and they resided in Northbridge, Mass. They were considerably wealthy, being able to afford servants and frequent travel excursions.[3] The home he lived in at Northbridge, built in 1868, is still standing.[1]
He died at the age of 87 years, in 1902.[4]
