Margaret Fletcher Whitin's surname is pronounced as the word "white", as the Whitin name was shortened from Whiting by Paul Whitin, father of Margaret. The reason given for this is that a Whiting relative was a saloon owner - and Paul Whitin didn't want his name associated with such a vocation!
