Plymouth Colony was settled in 1620 by the Pilgrims. During the next 65 years all the portion of southeastern Massachusetts and western Rhode Island was known as Plymouth County.
In 1682, Sakonnet was incorporated by the Plymouth Colony and renamed Little Compton.
In 1685, when the division was made of Plymouth Colony, Bristol County had the towns of Taunton, Rehoboth, Dartmouth, Swansea, Bristol, Tiverton, Little Compton, Freetown and the plantations of Cumberland, Gore, and Attleboro.
Plymouth Colony was merged into the Province of Massachusetts Bay in the charter of 1691.
By 1747, Little Compton secured its own royal decree and was annexed to Newport County as a part of Rhode Island along with Tiverton and Bristol. Because Little Compton was once part of the Plymouth Colony, all probate and land records prior to 1746 can be found in Taunton and New Bedford.
