Alford Williams and his family left many records that help outline not only his family but also his siblings.
Alford and family were the first to come to Kentucky before 1782, only 5 years after the 1st settlers. Indian raids were still a major threat so they settled 1st in the safety of Fort Harrod then in Lincoln Co., (now Harrodsburg, Mercer Co, Kentucky) ---------
Deposition on the death of Capt James Estill -
Taken 17 Jun 1803 in Jessamine Co Ky at the home of John Mosely. Deposition of Alfred Williams "That he was as resident [of Kentucky] previous to Nov 28, 1782 and that the event of the battle and death of Captain James Estill was subject of great notoriety and that he was killed in the battle with the Indians. He further agrees with the statements that there were 25 or 26 men engaged in battle with the Indians at the time Capt. James Estill was killed who were from different parts of the settlements of this country & a company was collected from different parts who went to bury the dead who were slain in the battle & such information thereby spread that any person with little trouble might have known where the place was." ___________
"Alfred Williams and Elizabeth Price married in Virginia in 1771. Eleven years later, in 1782, lured by the tales of wealth in the new country of Kentucky, they came to Old Fort Harrod over the Wilderness Trail. They had twelve children. The fourth child was named Joel P. and the seventh child Elisha Williams. This seventh child grew up and married Lucinda McGrath on May 13, 1813. Eight children were born of this union, Mary, Sydney, Martha, William. Merrill. Alfred, John, Alice, Joel, Joel P. Jr. and Lucinda."
Alford was still in Spotsylvania County in 1775 as in September of that year he, his wife (unnamed), and his son John leased 100 acres from Alexander Spotswood[1]. He was probably still there in 1782 when his father made made his will.
