Biography

'Poem written on the death of her husband (1833)

The following lines were written by Sister Boice, of Olive, Ulster Co., N. Y. on the death of her husband Peter Boice, who died on the 12th day of April last, aged 41 years, and published by her request.

Full five long months are past and gone,
Since I was left to weep and mourn,
For my companion on that day,
Was by Jehovah call’d away.

My weeks how sad they’ve past away,
And Oh! How sad each tedious day
All things around me seem to mourn
Since he is gone, ne’er return.

His smiling lips that once with me
Did banquit in prosperity,
That cheering voice which spake relief
No more consoles me when in grief,

When e’er I wander far, or near,
Lonely and widow’d, void of cheer;
Creation cannot give relief,
Nor yield a balm to cure my grief.

With me are left six children dear
’Rest of a guardian Father’s care;
My broken heart and spirits fail
While I relate my mournful tale,

How long shall my poor troubled breast
With anguish wreath, or be oppress’d;
God has a claim on all below
And when he calls, I too must go

I too must go, the thought how sweet,
That we beyond the grave shall meet,
Nor earth, nor hell, our bliss annoy
Nor sin, nor death polute our joy.

Through the redemption Christ has wrought
Our souls, transported shall be brought
To worship round God’s holy throne
And say, thy holy will be done.

My christian friends who are like me
Call’d to endure adversity,
Trust in the Lord his word is sure,
His truth and grace alike endure.

Er’e earth remain’d it was ordain’d
‘Twas heaven’s high decree,
That all the Bride for whom Christ died
Should live eternally.

Obituary from the Signs of the Times

Brother Beebe: - Please publish the death of sister Elizabeth Boice, who died Jan. 4, 1864, aged 73 years and about 3 months. She died in the triumph of faith and in hope of a blessed resurrection. She united with the Baptist church of Olive August 27, 1831, and was baptized by Eld. Hezekiah Pettit. She was a firm believer in the doctrine of God our Savior. Mild, amiable and gentle in disposition, she was kind and affectionate to all. She was left a widow, with a young family of four sons and two daughters, many years ago. Her counsel was always good and impressive, and generally well received by the family, even up to the time of her departure. She was like of those of whom Paul says "whose faith follow." She had a cough for many years, but was taken worse about the sixteenth of December last, and continued to decline until released by death, which she had sometimes longed for. She frequently asked to have sung the words beginning:

"O land of rest, for thee I sigh, " &c.

But was still willing to wait her appointed time. Death had no terror for her; she seemed glad that her dissolution was so nigh. Her family being sent for, stood around her dying bed, when she looked upon them very pleasantly and said, "Is this dying? O, if this is death, I shall soon fly away and be at rest." And in a few hours she fell asleep in Jesus without a struggle or groan.

Her funeral was preached from Heb. ix. 15.

JACOB WINCHELL.[1]
