Frank Winton was born in New Cross, London on 2nd Feb 1921, in a flat in Elm Terrace, which was situated over Gadstone's Grocers Shop. He was the second child born to Francis John Winton and Ada Elizabeth nee King. [1]

The family moved to 32, Mornington Road, New Cross, and Frank attended the Rachel McMillan open air school in Deptford.
He left school at the age of 14, and went to work as an apprentice at Merryweather's, a local firm in Greeenwich that built fire engines and fire fighting equipment.
He studied at night school for many years, and worked his way up in the company, from being on the shop floor, to the drawing office, then Chief Draughtsman and Works Manager.
The 1939 register showed Frank living at 32, Mornington Road, Deptford, with his parents. His occupation was given as apprentice engineers fitter [3]
During the 2nd World War, he continued to design and build fire fighting equipment, and also spent many nights watching for enemy planes approaching London
He married Doris Hilda Alger, on 7th October 1944, [4] and they moved into a flat in Avon Road, Brockley, where they raised their two children. In 1959, the family relocated to Wilmington, Kent.
Frank was passionate about his garden, spending all his free time working there, growing flowers, fruit and vegetables.
He enjoyed family holiday's to the Isle of Wight and Cornwall, and in later life went many times to the Isles of Scilly.
He died in Darent Valley Hospital on Christmas Day 2012, probate was granted on his estate on 4 June 2013 [5]
