Biography

The surname of Judith, wife of James Tuley, is often stated as Witt, but no reliable source substantiates the claim. There were several Witt families living in Colonial Virginia during this time frame. Her given name of Judith and Judy are given in several deeds of her husband (see his profile).

Judith is sometimes shown as born in Henrico County, possibly around 1726. She likely died in Albemarle County, Virginia, usually stated as 1789, but certainly after her husband's will was probated there in May 1781.[1]

Marriage

Judith married James Tuley about 1739, Goochland County, Virginia Colony, probably estimated from the birth of daughter Sarah in 1740. Judith's birth of 1726 is highly unlikely given she would have only been 13 in 1739. Please note that Albemarle County is often given as the county of their marriage, it was not formed until 1744 from Goochland County.

Children

Per TuleyRoots, the following 10 children are attributed to James and Judith Tuley[2]:

  1. Sarah (Tuley) New (abt.1740-1830)b. 23 Feb 1740
  2. John Tuley (1743-1818) b.1743
  3. Charles T. Tuley (abt.1750-1781) b. 1750
  4. James Tuley (abt.1750-bef.1803) b. 1750
  5. Anna Nancy (Tuley) Martin (abt.1750-aft.1810) b. 23 Nov 1750
  6. William Tuley (1756-1830) b. 21 Jul 1756
  7. Arthur Tuley (abt.1758-) b. 1758
  8. Elizabeth Tuley b. 1760
  9. Mary Tuley (1758-) b. 1762
  10. Judith Tuley (1762-) b. 1764

Research Notes

Witt-1888 23:32, 19 March 2023 (UTC): Parents proposed for Judith in TuleyRoots are John Witt, Jr. and Ann Rogers[3]. However, 1741 land records place James Tuley in Goochland County, later to become Albemarle County. William Witt wrote his will in 1754 in Albemarle County. William names 4 children and implies others, and there are large gaps in children's birth years. The possibility that Judith is his child is worth exploring.
