John Womack was born on November 14, 1833 in Warren, Tennessee, United States.[1] His parents were Wiliam Womack and Mary Mullican.[2]
He married Nancy Goodson on March 29, 1855 in Warren County, Tennessee.[3] Nannie (Goodson) Womack stated in her application for widows pension that she and her husband had no children (see below).
John enlisted in the CSA at Cam Smartt, Waren Co, Tennessee on 6 September 1861 and served in the 35th Infantry, Tennessee (Fifth Regiment Provisional Army, Mountain Rifle Regiment), Rank: ACS.[4][5] According to the Widows Pension Application filed by Nannie (Goodson) Womack on 25 March 1911 based on this service John was captured in East Tennessee (date unknown) and remained in POW Camp Chase until the end of the war. He later applied for a pension himself but "became insane and could do nothing."[6]
John died in December 1908 in Macon County, Tennessee and is buried in Willette Cemetery, Macon County.[7]
