NSSAR Ancestor #: 329755
Rank:

Abraham was born in 1742. Abraham Womack ... He passed away in 1797.[1]

  • Caution: There were actually two different Abraham Womacks in Greene Co, GA and later in Hancock Co, GA which was formed from Greene. Care must be taken to differentiate the two.
  • Abraham Womack[4]. Born on 22 Apr 1742 in Virginia. Abraham died in Hancock Co., GA, abt 1797; he was 54.
  • Abraham was a colonial soldier, in Lunenburg Co., VA. [5] and participated in the French and Indian War. He was a Magistrate, Council of Safety, Queensboro District, GA in the Revolutionary War [6]
  • In 1777, he paid taxes in Caswell Co., NC, along with his brothers, David and John. [7], but somewhere around this time moved to Georgia.
  • In 1792, Abraham deeded land to son Sherwood on Graybills Creek in Hancock Co., GA. [8]
  • In 1796 and 1797, in Hancock Co., GA, several deeds were recorded naming various possessions (land and slaves) he was more or less giving to his children. On 6 April 1796, he deeded his daughters Lucretia Howard, Sissley (sic) McFarland, and Nancy Stone several slaves, and he deeded Manuel (sic) a slave as well. These deeds were witnessed by Stephen Lawrence and David Womack. On 25 May 1797, he and Martha deeded Francis Coleman (husband of daughter Mary) a 75 acre tract of land on Graybill's Creek for $40. This was witnessed by John Read and Thomas Lightfoot. [9]
  • All of the children of the second marriage and second wife Martha, and some of the children of the first marriage are listed in the last Will and Testament of Abraham Womack[10] [11] [12] The children of the second marriage were all underage at the time of probate. There were 9 children in the first marriage and five in the second.
  • Abraham is apparently buried in Hancock Co., GA, probably on the land that Sherwood inherited, however the location of the burial is unknown. Martha Mitchell Womack is said to have died 1-Dec-1782 in Granville Co., NC, however, no documentation seems to exist for that. Similarly, various sources indicate that Martha's father was an "Edward Mitchell." Not only does no documentation support this, no Edward Mitchell even appears in relation to her in the records. John Mitchell was the second surety on the marriage bond. This was often a relative, so that is probably some indication.
  • His second wife was Martha Watkins, as shown by her father’s will where she is named as Patsy Womack. There is also a grandchild named Martha Watkins Coleman. She survived Abraham, as shown by his will, and it appears she remarried.
  • There was another Womack family in Hancock Co., GA in the same time period as Abraham Womack's family - that of Abraham and Judith Minter Womack. These two families interacted, as shown in various records, however, they were only distantly related. Given the location and similar names, it is occasionally difficult to distinguish between various members of the families.
  • A remaining puzzle is “Aunt Patsy Alford and Uncle Wiley” who John W. Womack mentions in a letter to his cousin Rebecca Hinds in 1850.[13] Presumably they would be in Troup Co., GA near enough that his greetings could be passed along. As near as I can tell, they are not relations on the Lewis side of the family, nor on the Rogers side. John W., despite believing in the Bishop Lawrence story and other stories passed to him from a VA cousin, was generally pretty reliable in referring to his own close relations by their correct relationship. Wiley and Martha Alforde were in the 1850 census of Troup Co. He was 60, she was 58, and they had in the household - Richard L 26, and Kinchen N. 21, all listed as b. GA. They were living among a passel of Rogers relations. Since she was b. abt 1797 or 98 it’s marginally possible she was a child of Abraham and Martha. This particular Wiley Alford did live in Hancock Co near the Womack family, his father James apparently moved there from Granville Co, as Abraham did. Martha’s maiden name is unknown. In 1860, Wiley was still in LaGrange (LaGrange, Troup Co., GA, family 1054), age 70, with only Kinchen (by initials, apparently JWK Alford) age 31 in the household. The Alford family may be a clue in the future given their early use of the names Kinchen and Cullen, and they apparently married into the Rogers family somehow.
  • On 31 Mar 1763 when Abraham was 20, he first married Martha Mitchell in Granville Co., NC.1 Born on 4 Mar 1744. Martha died in Granville Co., NC, on 1 Dec 1782; she was 38. They had the following children:
  • Abraham second married Martha Watkins, daughter of William Watkins & Wineford. They had the following children:
    • Elizabeth (1785-1855)
    • Sarah A.
    • Lucy
    • William
