Biography

Parentage; Date and Place of Birth

Margaret Woodworth was the daughter of Benjamin Woodworth and his second wife, Hannah Unknown.[1][2]

Margaret's date of birth is uncertain. The 1988 The Woodward Family estimates that she was born about 1703. However, that date of birth, as well as the dates of birth during 1693-1701 of Margaret's siblings Hannah, Ruth, Amos, Ezekiel and Judith that are given in the book, appear to just be rough estimates. Based on the fact that her brother Caleb was born in May 1704,[1] a birth date after 1702 appears unlikely, while based on Margaret's date of marriage (May 1718), a birth date even after 1700 seems unlikely. However, since Margaret's last child was born in May 1742, a date of birth prior to 1700 also seems unlikely. It therefore seems most probable that Margaret was born about 1700.

Since Margaret's family was living in Little Compton (which was then in Bristol County, Province of Massachusetts Bay, but is now in Rhode Island) from 1692-1703,[2] Margaret was very probably born there.

Removal to Lebanon, Connecticut

Margaret's family moved from Little Compton to Lebanon, Connecticut in 1703.[2]

Marriage

Margaret married Joshua Owen in Lebanon on November 5, 1718.[3][4][5][6][1]

Residency in Lebanon

Margaret and Joshua appear to have settled in Lebanon after their marriage, as the births of most of their children were recorded there. Margaret was admitted to the church in Lebanon on July 4, 1725.[7]

Children

Margaret and Joshua had the following children, all born in Lebanon (except possibly Althea, Martha and John, for whom no birth records have been found):

  1. Jemima, b. July 26, 1719,[8][9][5][6] m. February 20, 1751 John Knickerbocker[1]
  2. Leonard, b. December 13, 1720,[10][4][5][6] m. 1st Experience ____,[5] m. 2d April 28, 1757 Mary Stannard at Salisbury[5]

  4. Keziah, b. June 27, 1723,[13][4][5][6] m. June 15, 1744 Charles Brewster[5]

  9. (probably) Martha, b. before 1740, married Claudius Begrough 1760 (Martha is not found in Ricker or mentioned by William Arthur Owen)
  10. John "the first," b. before 1740,[6] m. March 4, 1736 Deborah Williams,[1][6] removed to Milton, Vermont.[1] (John is not found in Ricker or mentioned by William Arthur Owen)
  11. Naomi, b. September 15, 1740,[17][18][5] d. September 26, 1740 at Lebanon.[5] (Naomi is not mentioned by Ralph Dornfield Owen.)
  12. Samuel, b. May 26, 1742,[19][20][5][6] m. 1762 Lois Calkins[1]

Date and Place of Death

Margaret's date and place of death are uncertain. Since she gave birth to her last child on May 26, 1742, she died on or after that date. Many family trees state that she died in 1750, but no reliable source for that date has been offered or found. Since her husband moved from Lebanon to Salisbury, Connecticut sometime in 1751-1752,[21] Margaret probably died in either Lebanon or Salisbury, depending on her date of death.

1703 DOB is almost certainly too late since it is well established that she was married in 1718
