Note

Note: John is described in his Military attestation papers as being a farmer, five foot, ten inches tall, 157 lbs, dark complexion, blue eyes, black hair. His religion is noted as Church of England. John stated that he was in the Reserve Militia prior to enlisting.
John Henry was born in Newington, Surrey. Between the ages of 5 and 10, his parents moved to Edmonton, a busy area soon to become a part of the greater city of London.
His father, John Henry Wright Sr, married Emma Elizabeth Walker on Dec 23 1888, (Happy anniversary time!), at St Jude's Church in the parish of St George the Martyr in the county of Surrey. I have a photocopy of the marriage certificate.
John Henry Wright Sr had trained as a stationer's assistant and then became a paper envelope cutter ...everything was done by hand at that time and it was a craftspersons trade to cut special envelopes.
John Henry Jr was the first of their 3 children.
After Emma died in 1913, John Henry Wright Sr emigrated to Canada with his three children. The two boys went to work on farms as labourers while John found a place to live in downtown Toronto with his daughter Margaret and his sister-in-law Alice Walker who had accompanied them to Canada and was their housekeeper. The family was split up when they arrived in Canada due to a "one man one city" policy. John's daughter believes that John Henry went to Edmonton and maybe even attended the University of Edmonton, Arthur went to Winnipeg where he worked for the T Eaton Company and Margaret worked on a farm and ran the kitchen. It was also believed that the indirect cause of Margaret's (Maggie's) death in 1920 was the Spanish flu.
When the war broke out, both John & Arthur were in Winnipeg area and enlisted there. Both were sent to England and then on to France to fight.
John Henry became ill with terrible lung problems due to the living conditions while the solders fought. He was exposed to gas which damaged his lungs.
He was sent back to hospital in England twice to recover and then went back to fight. Finally he had to be discharged because of his health.
While he was in England, either for his recovery or on leave, he met Kate Sylvia Fenemore and married her March 6 1918 in the registry office in Fulham before he returned to active duty. Kate continued to live with her family in Fulham while John went back to active service. By June 1919, Kate realized that she was pregnant and like many war brides, traveled alone to Canada to meet her husband's family and have her child in the country of her new husband,
John Henry was discharged from active service February 18 1920 and returned to Toronto where he was treated at Christie Street Military Hospital for his lung problems and a partial stroke. He worked on small jobs for the rest of his life but received a small disability pension as he could not work full time any more and continued to suffer from the damage to his lungs.
He died in Feb 24 1936 in Toronto and is buried in the veteran's section at Prospect Cemetary. http://www.mountpleasantgroup.com/pre-planning/cemeteries/properties/p has a picture of the veteran's memorial and a brief write up. Every year the first ceremony of the day in Toronto is held on Remembrance Day at this memorial. John Henry's grave marker is an official flat marker in the ground in the circle around the monument.
John's brother Arthur was taken prisoner during the war and suffered poor treatment in a prisoner of war camp. After he was released at the end of the war, he returned to Winnipeg and married.
Shortly after John returned to Canada, where he was hospitalized, his young sister Margaret died on April 21 1920 from tubercular meningitis. She was buried on April 24 1920 in Prospect Cemetery. The family was desolated by her death. She was not yet 26 years old.
In September 1920, with John Henry still unfit to travel, Kate took her new son John home to England to be christened in St Paul's, Hammersmith, London, and to see her family.
John Henry Wright and his wife Kate bought their home at 5 Newman Avenue in Toronto in 1924. They were living there when John Henry died and Kate continued to work and live there and raise her children on her own after his death. Kate was a strong woman who had worked and looked after her children and her husband. She was very involved in the running of the local chapter of the Royal Canadian Legion and found it to be a great resource and emotional support.

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
