Served in both Confederate and Union units during Civil War, about two years on each side. Was in Arkansas infantry unit 1861-1863, captured at Port Hudson, Louisiana. Paroled, he returned to Arkansas and joined Union Cavalry unit-- was injured skirmishing for bushwhackers, horse fell and injured back and button pressed into flesh of hand. Worked as farmer, coal miner and teamster. Applied for disability pension in 1883, admitted served in Confederate Army but said was forced to join-- application denied. At death was receiving Federal disability pension of $72 a month. Was corporal in both armies. At discharge was charged for sword and saber and returned to Indiana. New Albany newspaper said he swam Ohio River shortly before his death, almost 84. In 1860 Census was listed with parents and siblings living in Denton County, Texas.
