WRIGHT, DAVID W. (1834-1928) David Wright, Texas Ranger and Confederate veteran, was born September 6, 1834, in what was then called Rutherford County, North Carolina to Moses and Elizabeth Wright. Wright settled in Texas around 1858 and joined the Texas Rangers Frontier Battalion in 1861 under the command of Captain G.S. Fitzhugh and was charged with defending Texas from Indian raids near the Red River. He later enlisted in the Confederate Army, joining Company C of the 2nd Texas Infantry in August 1862. He was shipped as far east as Mississippi and fought for the Confederacy at the Siege of Vicksburg. He was taken prisoner approximately July 4, 1863 and paroled as a part of prisoner exchange 12 days later. He was shipped back to Texas where he rejoined the 2nd Texas Infantry despite signing an oath swearing he would never take up arms against the United States again. The 2nd Infantry formally surrendered at Galveston on May 26, 1865. After the end of the Civil War, Wright settled into a farming career in Grayson County and married Arritta Wright. The couple had eight children: Willis, Johnny, Ella, Martha Angeline, Edna, Leslie, Elizabeth and Katie. He took residence in the Confederate Men's Home in Austin on December 14, 1916 and died there August 5, 1928.
