Biography

Pinkney was born in 1836. Pinkney Wyan was born in Lincoln County, North Carolina, and moved to Greenville, TN with his family in 1850. Pinkney married Malinda Templin of Johnson City, TN in 1860. They had two children (Margaret and Victoria) while in Tenn. After the birth of Victoria, they moved to Laurel Co., KY during the Civil War. On that trip, Pinkney was captured by the Confederate Army and was held in a prison in Tennessee. Malinda and the two girls had to return to Tenn. and stay at Malinda's father's farm. Pinkney later escaped and joined the Union Army in Tenn 3rd Mounted Infantry, F Company out of Greenville TN in 1864. His Company fought in several skirmishes around Bull's Gap and Lee's Ferry. During one skirmish, Pinkney was effected by exposure and left the battle to get help at a nearby farm. He was listed as a deserter and had to prove (letter from the doctor at the farm) that he was ill. He was eventually diagnosed with pleurisy and rheumatism for which he received a disability pension from the government. In October 1866 Pinkney took his family to Kentucky again, settling on an 800 acre farm in Laurel Co. He built a large log house and raised livestock, horses, and bees. Pinkney donated some land for a small school (Wyan Public School) which was still standing in 1979. Pinkney was 5'10" with a fair complexion, medium build, black hair, and almost always sported a long white beard in later life. Pinkney died of cerebral apoplexy (stroke) on May 27, 1920. Pinkney and Malinda Wyan are buried in the Early Graveyard in Laurel County, KY. He passed away in 1920. [1]
