Biography

Son of Jonathan Wesley Yarrington and Sarah Ann Speer, husband of Joanna Elizabeth Skinner whom he married on May 8, 1854 and father of Charles E., Adrian Monroe (m. Marie LeFebvre), Mary Viola (m. William F. L'Ecluse), and Samuel Hammond Yarrington (m. Grace L'Ecluse).

Obituary - Charles Wesley Yarrington, one of Sayville's best-known and best loved citizens was found dead last Saturday afternoon by his son-in-law William F. LeCluse, at the latter's home where he had lived for the past five or six years. Mr. Yarrington had suffered from a severe heart trouble for many years and of late had been stricken several times rather suddenly. In one of these unexpected attacks he passed away about four o'clock Saturday afternoon.

The deceased was born in Sayville, 79 years ago and had always lived there. He was the last but one of a large and prominent family of six brother and two sisters, one sister Mrs. Harriet Crosby still surviving. Until two years ago, Captain Yarrington with Captain Josiah Smith made regular fishing trips, but health then began to fail him and he retired, after a long life of hard and fruitful toil on the bay. In his younger days, he was the most expert purse net fisherman in this vicinity and throughout his life in all nautical matters was very marked. His friends were legion and in speaking of him, one who was always a close personal friend and at times a business associate said "Of all the things which you could say of him, none can be too good." He was a good Christian and a true gentleman. Nothing finer can be said of any man.

About 30 years ago Captain Yarrington was a half-owner of the Fire Island fish factory which was removed some time ago to make was for beach developments and at various times was identified with well-known business and social enterprises. Besides his sister, Mrs. Crosby, Mr. Yarrington is survived by a daughter, Mrs. William F. LeCluse of Sayville, and two sons, Prof. Adrian Yarrington and Samuel Yarrington, both of Brooklyn. His wife, who was Joanna Skinner, died about six years ago, since which time he made his home with his daughter Mrs. LeCluse. Funeral services conducted by the Rev. A.M. Wilkins were held at 2:30 o'clock on Tuesday afternoon in the Methodist church of which the deceased has long been a member. Services at the grave in Union Cemetery were conducted by Sayville Lodge, I.O.O.F. No. 322, of which Captain Yarrington had for many years been a member.
