Elizabeth was a Friend (Quaker)

Biography

Elizabeth Zachary was born in London in 1675 to parents Thomas Zachary, a physician and his wife Elizabeth who were Quakers.

In 1695 Elizabeth married Joshua Stephens, a schoolteacher, in a Quaker ceremony in London. They had at least two children. In 1715, after the death of her first husband, she married again, this time to Thomas Duckett a widower and landowner from Phillipstown, County Carlow, Ireland. He was also a Quaker and their marriage was also a Quaker ceremony in London. She must have died before 18 Jan 1732/3 when Thomas Duckett wrote his will in which he described her as his 'late wife'.

Research notes

No death record located, but she had died when Thomas Duckett wrote his will in 1732.

In the 1850 edition of 'A Genealogical and Heraldic Dictionary of the Landed Gentry of Great Britain and Ireland' Burke shows Elizabeth Stephens as the mother of Thomas Duckett's children. This was corrected by the 1912 edition. In any event, the Quaker records cited as sources on their profiles make it clear that their mother was Jane Bunce.

Elizabeth had a grandchild Elizabeth Pike, mentioned in the will of Thomas Duckett. It is not clear whether she was the daughter of Rebecca Stephens or of another child not yet identified.

Zachary-594 and Stevens-3824 appear to represent the same person because: Elizabeth Stephens relict of Joshua Stephens married Thomas Duckett of Philipstown Carlow in a Quaker ceremony in Peel Court, Westminster, on 20 Nov 1717 (Quaker marriage record on Ancestry.com.) Thomas Zachary was the second witness signing the register.

She married her first husband, Joshua Stephens in London on 25 July 1695. I think they had at least three children, Rebecca b 4 Mar 1697/8 and Joshua died 6 Mar 1705/6 aged 3. There must also have been an Elizabeth who married someone called Pike, as she is mentioned in Thomas Duckett's will.

I haven't found a record of her death, but she had died before Thomas Duckett wrote his will in 1732/3.
