Name LeBreton dit Robert. Should be listed as LeBreton without the "dit Robert" correct?

I have a couple of last names with "dit" in them (Gaspe, Quebec area).  From my research the name after dit is a nick name given to a sailor in the marines in the 18 hundreds. Some family members continued to list the "dit" on their birth, marriage and death certificates.  Some certificates do list them and while others don't.  How do we handle these types of names.  This example, LeClerc dit Robert do we list the profile with or without "dit Robert".

Dit was oiginally added to names in France.It was used because there

were so many people with same name.Some are seen in early Canada.

Like a simple name John Smith.Since there were so many,one

would add something like Dit Belisle too his name.Dit was explained on

Google,but have not looked recently.

Keep them. Not only are dit names often the only way to keep track of people and families in Colonial Quebec, many times different parts of the name were adopted by different branches of the same family, eg some would become Robert and some would become LeBreton.
