Born September 1948 to Henry and Laurel Bolton. Henry had been recently demobilised after the war, and was working as a garage attendant at AGL. He and Laurel (and later myself) were living with his sister and family at 42 Ludgate St, Lakemba. They had bought a block of land near where Roselands shopping centre now stands - in those days Roselands was a dairy farm. They engaged a builder to erect the house - a simple timber and fibro dwelling. During the building period, we all lived in a tent in the back yard.
I started school at Beverly Hills North Public School, but was only there for a year or so, when we sold up and moved to Abbotsford, to be with my grandfather, who was in declining health. I achieved well at primary school, eventually being named Dux of School at the end of sixth class, as it was known then.
High school presented new challenges for a misfit nerd, and while I still achieved well, I was not as sharp as I had been in primary, for some of my old Abbotsford classmates were now outstripping me. Don't get me wrong, I was still in the top 10 or 15%, but not as good as I had been. During this period I developed an interest in electronics, and built a few projects, which included both a stereo amplifier and a guitar amplifier.
Beginning in second class, I had been taking piano lessons, first with a Miss Tilley, in Irene St, and later with Miss Dorothea Fraser, on Great North Road, just south of Edenholme Rd. I had done fairly well, and into high school I decided to expand my horizons to guitar. I did OK, but without any great flair. Keyboards were still my weapon of choice.
All this time I had been involved with church, first at Stanmore Baptist, where the Swinfield family had been prominent for a significant time, Mum being one of the organists, and later at Haberfield Baptist, after there had been some sort of falling out, the details of which I never knew (I was too young, at about 6 or 7), however neither Mum nor Auntie Doreen ever got involved at Haberfield. Us three kids were regular at Sunday School, and later, Christian Endeavour as well, and Neil and I were in the Lifeboys (junior Boys Brigade). Somewhat later, at about 18 or 19, I became disappointed with the Baptist-centric "our way or no way" attitude, and the continued lack of acceptance despite my loyalty and enthusiasm, and moved to Croydon Park Presbyterian Church, where, within a matter of weeks, I was the organist, usually for both services each Sunday.
At this stage I had started at the University of New South Wales, studying Industrial Chemistry. However, at the end of the first year, I bought my first car - a 1958 Austin A50. This was a clunker, in the very worst interpretation of the term. We drove it home, and immediately started pulling it down, to replace the rings and bearings. As a result, it was now possible to drive behind it without a respirator. I did many miles in that vehicle that year, breaking down on a number of occasions, but almost always making it home. However, my studies suffered, and at the end of the year I failed two subjects, resulting in me not being able to progress. I had, at this stage, taken a summer job at Unilever, as a lab assistant at the Balmain factory. When my results came out, I was able to convert this into a permanent position as a trainee chemist. Thus, after a further three years, I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Technology (B. Sc. (Tech))

We're contacting you for the annual Australia Project membership checkin. We really appreciate your involvement in the Project in the last year. Thank you so much for all your help to improve Australian profiles on WikiTree.
Please could you reply to this message, or send me a private message to let us know if you'd like to stay on in the Project, and if you'd like to make any changes to the teams that you belong to. The teams are listed on Australia Project Teams.
If you've moved on to other things for the moment, that's absolutely fine. We'd appreciate if you'd let us know so that we can remove you from the membership list.
Over the past year, Australia Project members have been more active on Discord. We're finding it a fun way to communicate as a project. If you're not on Discord yet, here's some information - Help:Discord. If you are already on the WikiTree Discord server, let us know, and we can send you an invite link to the dedicated Australia Project server (WikiAustralia) where all our chat channels are located. It's a great way to communicate with other members on your project team/s, or for any general questions.
We're always happy to receive any ideas or suggestions that you have to make our project even better.
Looking forward to hearing from you!

It's time for the annual Australia Project membership checkin. Thank you so much for contributing to the project and Australian profiles on WikiTree during the last year. We really appreciate you!
If you would like to stay in the project, please reply to this message or send me a private message to let us know that you would like to stay on. Alternatively, if your WikiTree and research interests have moved away from Australia, please let us know and we can remove you from the membership list for the moment. You will, of course, be very welcome to rejoin the project down the track whenever you want to.
We are also keen to know if you want to make any changes to the team or teams that you want to focus on. Take a look on Australia Project Teams to see what teams there are to choose from. If you want to discuss this, or have any questions or suggestions about the Australia Project we'd love to hear your ideas.
Thanks for taking the time to get back to us!
Gillian, co-Leader, Australia Project
Yes, I'm still involved in various projects, mainly revolving around cemeteries, particularly in the Central West (NSW) but also more widely, mainly where I'm taken by the various branches of the families I'm working on. I don't know what projects I'm registered with, but the relevant ones to me would be NSW, cemeteries, convicts, bounty immigrants, born in the colony and free settlers. So put me down for what you like.
Thanks,
Ian
Thank so much for all that hard work! That's so fantastic.
You're only on the Convicts team at the moment, I think. How about I add you to NSW as well? You're welcome to work on tasks relevant to any of the teams, whether you're on the team or not, anyway. If you decide want to focus in a particular area/team, just get back to me again. Also you might think about checking out the Cemeterist Project and see if the scope of that project fits in with what you're doing.
Great to have you in the project! Gillian
In fact, cemeteries are really my main focus. My order of operations is thus:
1. Determine if a cemetery has been entered on Australian Cemeteries Index. (Generally I concentrate on the Central West of NSW). 2. Photograph all the individual graves in the cemetery. 3. Transcribe the details on each headstone, creating a profile on austcemindex for each. 4. Create profiles for each person on wikitree, adding as much detail as I easily can (birth, death and marriage dates and references among others).
As you can imagine, this is all quite time consuming, so that's where most of my geni time goes.
Regards,
Ian
I just replied to you reply, but it goes to a "no reply"address. so following is a copy and paste of the message.\
"OK Gillian, put me on any that you feel are relevant. I don't do much on the bounty immigrants or the convicts, but there are interests there (e.g. there are at least 4 convicts in my direct ancestors). I am already registered with the cemeterist project.
Ian."
The Australia Project leadership team are carrying out our annual check-in to see how you are going in the project. We'd really like to thank you for all your work on Australian profiles over the past year! We think we've made great progress in 2020/21 with your assistance.
Please could you reply to this message, to let us know if you would like to stay on in the project and if you are happy with your current role and team involvement. If you would like to do something additional or different, take a look on the Australia Project page to see what other options there are.
It would also be great to get any feedback or suggestions that you have to improve the project.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind Regards
Margaret Haining Membership Coordinator
The Australia Project leadership team are carrying out a check-in to see how you are going in the project and especially to thank you for all your work on Australian profiles on WikiTree. We really value your participation.
Please could you get back to me by private message to let me know if you are happy with your current role and team involvement within the project or if you would like to do something additional or different. Currently we have you down as a member of the Convicts team. If you would like a change, you can check on the Australia Project page to see what other options there are.
It would also be great to hear any feedback and any suggestions that you have to improve the project. On a practical note, if you are a member of the google group, are you receiving messages ok? Also you might consider adding Australia as one of the tags you are following on the G2G.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Gillian, co-Leader, Australia Project
I'm still plugging away at my cemeteries, but mainly on Photographing, and even more so, on transcribing. It looks like I'm going to have to go back and re-photograph some, as they are too indistinct to transcribe. But I'll get there!
Ian
The Global Cemeteries Project is currently undergoing our member check-in and wanted to verify that you are still active and interested in being a member of the project. Are you currently assigned to or working with one of our Cemetery Teams? If not, is there a particular Team or area you are interested in participating with? I would be delighted to help you get setup in one or more of our collaborative teams!
We use Google Groups for internal project collaboration, so if you are not yet setup for access feel free to submit a join request and we will get that approved as quick as possible. We also ask that members check their follwed tags to make sure you are following the correct project tag (CEMETERIES) so you don't miss any disucssions in G2G.
Last, but not least, we would like to thank you for all of your contributions to WikiTree and let you konw that any ideas or suggestions for improvement you may have for the Global Cemeteries Project would greatly appreciated!
I look forward to hearing form you soon!

Weve made some exciting changes to the Global Cemeteries Project. The sub-projects have been merged into the Global Project to help with Leadership and to facilitate collaboration.
Some roles within the project have changed. From now on, there are Project Coordinators for each continent, and one for Welcome and Integration, plus Team Leaders for each individual Country etc.
Please let me know if youd like to stay on in the new project, if youd like to continue in an existing role, and which team(s) youd like to be on. Please also give me your e-mail address so that I can get you added to the projects Google Group.
Many thanks,

This week we have your last stop on the guided tour. Hopefully, you're feeling like a WikiTree pro! If not, you can always revisit the tour stops via the comment boxes on the right side of your profile.
You've covered a lot of ground the past few weeks. Today, we want to give you just a few more tools that can take you even deeper into the WikiTree forest without getting lost: How to Dig a Little Deeper.
Please do not hesitate to ask questions!
Thanks, WikiMesssenger Cindy
PS Great work, keep it up! Were you aware that on your ancestors profiles at the bottom right is "Research" where you can find sources and more information. Give it a try sometime!
You may have been hard at work getting connected to family members who are already here and adding those who were missing. You probably have at least a few profiles that you manage now.
There's a fast and easy way to access those profiles using the Watchlist. So, this week we're going to look at How to Manage Your Watchlist.
Please let one of us know if you have questions! Just click my name above the comment, then ask in the comment section of my page. We want to help!

PS. Looks like you've had fun with the lessons, your tree is starting to take shape. Next time you touch the profiles, please consider adding some sources (examples). It will help collaboration. Thanks for sharing!
You have been here for a while now! We hope your profiles are starting to come together and that you've enjoyed getting to know all of us a little better.
You're probably getting a good feel for the collaborative nature of WikiTree by now. We know that collaboration isn't always easy. So, we've put together a few pointers that can make working in this type of environment a little easier: How to be a Successful WikiTreer.
Have questions? We want to help! Click the name above any of your comments, then ask in the comment section of that volunteer's page.
