Disputed Associations

Not shown the wife of Christopher Goodwin (1618-aft.1692). Her association as the woman otherwise Mary (unknown) Goodwin (abt.1618-1683) has been disputed by WikiTree collaborators. No contemporaneous historical evidence was found to support that Mary Crouch was the wife of Christopher Goodwin and mother of his son, Christopher Goodwin Jr. (1647-1702). These associations were severed in 2022. See Research Notes.

Biography

Mary was born about 1617 or 18 in Devon, England. She was the daughter of William Crouch and Elizabeth Hodgies.

Research Notes

Not shown the wife of Christopher Goodwin (1618-aft.1692). FindAGrave reports Mary Crouch as the wife of Christopher Goodwin, but historical evidence for this relationship is not shown. See also 2022 profile comments here and here.

Prior Version of Profile. A prior version of this profile reported she was "She was admitted to the Charlestown Church 9/6/1656. She passed away about 1683." Also, "The Find-a-Grave memorial has her date of death 1/22/1682, which is the date of death for her husband, Christopher." These entries are about Mary (unknown) Goodwin (abt.1618-1683), who is not shown to have been the same person as Mary Crouch.

  • Mary Crouch Goodwin, memorial 51148865 and gravestone image; web content, FindAGrave, maintained by BobBoston, who also supplied the gravestone image. Note: the memorial does not provide a gravestone inscription and nothing further informs us of historical support to show that Christopher's wife was born Mary Crouch.

Proposal to sever spousal relationship. In reviewing the profile of Christopher Goodwin (1618-aft.1692), now linked as the spouse of this Mary Crouch, we didn't find historical evidence and analysis to support that association. (We didn't even find notes to indicate how this association might have come to be.)

Assuming the spousal relationship is severed, this Mary's relationship to her linked son, Christopher Goodwin Jr. (1647-1702), will also be severed. (See the helpful comment by Kay (Johnson) Wilson, here.)

If anyone objection. to the proposal, please post so that we may collaborate further.--Gene

Unknown-536713 and Crouch-2756 appear to represent the same person because: Please agree to merge these duplicate profiles. Thanks!

Unknown-536713 and Crouch-2756 do not represent the same person because: Thank you for supporting WikiTree. Unless I have missed something, this association lacks reliable sources--historical records and related analysis--showing that Christopher Goodwin's wife, Mary, was otherwise Mary Crouch. If such work exists, please post so that we may collaborate further. --Gene

Hi Kay,

Please see the comment just below, also here and here.

As yet, no historical records or analysis have been shown to support the identity of Christopher's wife, Mary (unknown) Goodwin (abt.1618-1683), is otherwise this Mary Crouch.

If such records are known, please post so that we may collaborate further. --Gene

Thanks, Gene.

Everything you've said makes sense. If this profile is to be detached from Christopher Goodwin-210, it looks like her son, Christopher Goodwin-10131 needs to be detached from her, and changed to the correct wife/mother, Mary unknown-536713.

I have posted a lengthy comment to the profile of Christopher Goodwin (1618-aft.1692), Among other changes, have proposed his marriage to this Mary Crouch be severed. From that comment, in relevant part,
[The wife] Mary (Crouch) Goodwin (abt.1617-abt.1683) [seems an alter-ego] of our Mary (unknown) Goodwin (abt.1618-1683).
Mary (Crouch) Goodwin (abt.1617-abt.1683) profile cites (1) Mary Crouch Goodwin, memorial 51148865; web content, FindAGrave, maintained by BobBoston; and (2) various online family files as (a) Mary Crouch profile, "Goodwin - Keithley Genealogy"; web content, Goodwin-Keithley.net; (b) Tim Dowling, "Mary Crouch"; web content, Geneanet; (c) Irene Clough Hahn, "Whose Family is it Anyway? (... from the line of Christoper Goodwin)"; web content, RootsWeb.com. These files either do not report a LNAB for Christopher's wife or provide no proof that she was the woman who married Christopher. See also the related comment dated 15 November 2021.

According to Massachusetts records, Christopher Jr married Mary/Mercy Crouch on May 11, 1671; she could not have been Nathaniel's mother.

There are profiles of both Mary (Crouch) Goodwin and Mercy (Crouch) Goodwin. WikiTree reports both married men, Christopher Goodwin.

I don't find any pre-1700 reliable sources posted to the profile of Mary (Crouch) Goodwin, said born England, 1617 or 1618, admitted to Charlestown church 1656, died 1683. Her marriage to Christopher Goodwin [Sr] is undated. Given their reported death data, this Mary (Crouch) Goodwin (abt.1617-abt.1683) is an unsourced duplicate of the other wife attached to Christopher, Mary (unknown) Goodwin (abt.1618-1683). The latter profile sports only "Torrey" as a source, but Christopher's profile calls his wife Mary Unknown, and includes various sources.

While I may have missed something, I haven't seen the historical references showing the Christopher Sr.'s wife is this Mary Crouch, but she is reported the mother of Christopher Goodwin Jr. (1647-1702), whose wife is Mercy (Crouch) Goodwin.

Was her husband Christopher Goodwin? It is claimed to be him on FamilySearch. Please see also this comment. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Goodwin-210#comment_4228112
