Historical Hereditary Sheriffs of Cromarty

William Urquhart of Cromartie Heritable Sheriff of Cromarty, who married Lilias, daughter of Hugh of Ross.

Adam Urquhart Sheriff of Cromarty, who married Bridgida Fleming of Cumbernauld.

John Urquhart Sheriff of Cromarty, who married Agnes Ramsay.

Sir William Urquhart Sheriff of Cromarty, who married Susanna Forbes

William Urquhart Sheriff, first son of Sir William who married Mariot Rose.

Sir Alexander Urquhart Sheriff of Cromarty, second son, who married Katherine Ogilvie

Sir Thomas Urquhart of Fisherie Sheriff of Cromarty, 7th Chief, who married the Hon. Helen Abernethy and is reputed to have had 25 sons.

Walter Urquhart, 8th Laird of Cromarty Sheriff of Cromarty, who married firstly, Elizabeth Mackenzie daughter of Kenneth Mackenzie, 10th of Kintail. As Henry, his heir, died during his lifetime, on his demise, the next heir was Walter's grandson, Thomas.

Sir Thomas Urquhart Sheriff of Cromarty, who married Christian Elphinstone, Lady Cromartie daughter of the 4th Lord Elphinstone, and parents of the famous Sir Thomas Urquhart.

Sir Thomas Urquhart, The Genealogist the illustrious Sir Thomas, Sheriff of Cromarty, 12th Chief of Clan Urquhart, who died unmarried. The estates were succeeded by his brother Alexander.

Sir Alexander Urquhart of Dunlugas Sheriff of Cromarty, married Jean Elphinstone but died without male issue. Thence the line passed to Sir John Urquhart, his second cousin, there obviously being no surviving younger family sons.

Sir John Urquhart of Craigston and Cromarty Sheriff of Cromarty, next in line to inherit the Cromarty estate as the gr. grandson of Walter's only surviving brother John. He married Lady Barbara Mackenzie daughter of George, 2nd Earl of Seaforth.

Urquhart of Meldrum, Chief's of Clan

William Urquhart of Meldrum 4th Laird of Meldrum, last Sheriff of Cromarty (ended 1747), married to Mary Forbes as his first spouse, also succeeded to the Chiefship in 1741 on the death of Colonel James Urquhart.

Wilkins Fisk Urquhart of Urquhart, 9th of Braelangwell 26th Chief of Clan Urquhart, succeeded in 1959.

Kenneth Trist Urquhart of Urquhart, 10th of Braelangwell 27th Chief of Clan Urquhart, succeeded his father in 1974 and succeeded by his son, Wilkins, in 2012.

Research Notes

• The internet varies in the numbering of the chief's. Wikiwand gives the famous Sir Thomas as 12th Chief. Burke's and Clan Macfarlane gives Francis as number 24. The later Wilkins varies between 25th and 26th. Either way, the numbering is out of count.Urquhart-93 20:38, 18 February 2020 (UTC)
