This is an extension of the Urquhart Name Study devoted to the Urquhart of Davidston Lines.


Introduction

Urquhart is an ancient Scottish family name of great antiquity. Often with several spellings of the name, including Airchart-dan, Urchoden, Urchardan, Urchadainn, de Urchard, Orchoden, de Urquhartt, Urquhard, Urchard, Hurchard, Wrghward and Wruhurt.

Urquhart was most certainly, originally a place-name, as early members of the family were often described as "de Urquhart." There are several place-names. Urquhart Castle on Loch_Ness in the Scottish Highlands, the parish of Urquhart near Elgin, where there was a Priory. and Urquhart Parish in the Black Isle. There is also a place of the name in Fife


Urquhart of Davidston.
The Urquhart's of Davidston descend from Thomas Urquhart of Davidston, one of the younger sons of Thomas Urquhart of Fischerie, Laird of Cromarty and Helen Abernethy. Thomas Urquhart owned Davidston in Cromartyshire, Scotland in 1564 and died in 1608.
Thomas Urquhart of Davidston had at least two sons with his first wife, whose name is unknown. They were Thomas Urquhart of Kinbeachie and Henry Urquhart.
Thomas Urquhart of Davidson and his second wife Christian Murray had at least two sons, Alexander Urquhart of St. Martins and Thomas Urquhart, Minister of Ardersier, and a daughter, Helen Urquhart.

Thomas Urquhart, Minister of Ardersier's first wife was Agnes Robertson .
Their children were
1 John Urquhart, of whom, not much is known.
2 Christian or Christina Urquhart who married William Campbell of Galcantray.
Thomas Urquhart, Minister of Ardersier's second wife was Christian Bruce of Airth.
Their children were
3 Alexander Urquhart of Newhall who married Nicola Guthrie and Lilias Dallas.
4 Thomas Urquhart of Braelangwell from whom the present Urquhart Chief descends, and who married Henrietta Douglas of the Glenbervie family. .
5 Margaret Urquhart who married James Mercer.

Newhall

Alexander Urquhart of Newhall also married twice.
Alexander Urquhart had at least seven sons.

Alexander Urquhart married firstly, Nicola Guthrie.
Their children were
1 John Urquhart of Newhall who married Jean Mackenzie of Redcastle. John had two sons. One son was Captain Alexander, who lost Newhall. The other son was John, who was the ancestor of the short lived Monteagle branch, which lasted two generations. The also, short lived Hobland Hall and Broadmayne family branches extend from here.
2 Robert Urquhart alive in 1679, Baillee in Resolis. named as second son.
3 James Urquhart Ships Carpenter.
4 Thomas Urquhart Ships Carpenter and Baillee in Inverness. d1712.
5 Samuel Urquhart currently under research (2022) by Dr Jim Mackay, Chairman of the Kirkmichael Trust.
6 William Urquhart alive in 1688.

Alexander Urquhart married secondly 25th December 1677, Lilias Dallas.
Their children were
7 Jonathon Urquhart at Aberdeen, died young.
8 George Urquhart of Greenhill merchant during successful Herring Fishery era.
9 Anne Urquhart who married Adam Gordon of Dalpholly and mother of William Gordon, 1st Baronet of Invergordon
10 Christian Urquhart who married Hugh Dallas of Bracklie

Braelangwell

Thomas Urquhart of Braelangwell
who married Henrietta Douglas and had at least three children,
1 William Urquhart who married Anna MacCulloch.
2 Jean Urquhart who married Alexander Inglis.
3 John Urquhart, Reverend of Gartly, from whence, the present Urquhart Clan Chief.

St. Martins

The Urquhart's of St. Martins descend from Alexander Urquhart, brother to Thomas Urquhart of Kinudie and fourth son of Thomas Urquhart of Davidston.
Alexander Urquhart of St. Martins
Not much is known except that Alexander married Agnes Munro and had a grandson named Henry. This branch of the family did not last past five generations.

Hobland Hall, Broadmayne, Kinbeachie, Monteagle and Greenhill also branch from this line.
