Goals
This is a One Name Study to collect together in one place everything about one surname and the variants of that name. Urquhart... The hope is that other researchers like you will join our study to help make it a valuable reference point for people studying lines that cross or intersect.
Introduction
Urquhart is an ancient Scottish family name of great antiquity. Often with several spellings of the name, including Airchart-dan, Urchoden, Urchardan, Urchadainn, de Urchard, Orchoden, de Urquhartt, Urquhard, Urchard, Hurchard, Wrghward and Wruhurt.
Urquhart was most certainly, originally a place-name, as early members of the family were often described as "de Urquhart." There are several place-names. Urquhart Castle on Loch_Ness in the Scottish Highlands, the parish of Urquhart near Elgin, where there was a Priory. and Urquhart Parish in the Black Isle. There is also a place of the name in Fife
- Urquhart, A fairly common place name occurring 12th - 14th century, as Urchard. Also seen as Airchartan,
The Urquharts of Cromarty, who began as the head of the family, owned the greater part of the shire in the Black Isle and also property in Ross, Inverness, Aberdeen, Nairn, Moray and Banff shires.
The office of Hereditary Sheriff of the shire of Cromarty was vested in them from the days of Robert the Bruce, and they possessed the "privilege of Admiralty" along the eastern coast of Scotland from Caithness to Inverness. The Urquhart family held the Sheriffship almost uninterrupted from 1357 until 1747 when because of the Jacobite Risings, heritable jurisdictions were abolished.

Kenneth Trist Urquhart, DNA William Craig Laurence March 21, 2019 @ 7:25am The current chief has not tested. His late father, Kenneth Trist Urquhart, tested his Y-DNA, up to 37 markers. I have queried the clan association, to see who manages that old account, but no one has helped me with this matter. I would like to see the testing upgraded from 37 markers to 111 markers. The test kit number is 21071, on our Y-DNA test results webpage. Best regards. Craig

Resolis, Ross and Cromarty pre 1747 Records Burnt!!
- Paragraph Extract, written in 1836.
- "There are no records, either printed or in manuscript, of the history of this parish. Even the scanty, and often not very agreeable information to be derived from the church session records, is wanting; these repositories of past irregularities having been committed to the flames, soon after the induction of the late incumbent."
