Thank you Frank - can only guess dates - have death certificate for his son James Allan Rowe, died 1913 - this shows George and Helen (Pearce) as parents George listed as Blacksmith of Cornwall. The death certificate for James shows he has been in NZ 50 years so must have come here as 10 yo with his parent(s) - I have hit a blank wall - maybe George remarried? Thank you, Mary

I have Found a DOD register for James in 1913 age 60 Reg No 1913/2400 his DOB is down as 1853 does this match with info you have?

I have found some thing strange in Births search on find my past for a James Allen Rowe.

DOB 1852 Mothers Maiden Name Allen. Redruth Cornwall.

Volume 5C Page 310

I can not find a marriage record for George and a female called Allen.

I have found a Marriage record for a George Rowe Married a Mary Ann Pearse in1855 in Redruth. Volume No 5c Page No 464

Do you have any dates? Of birth and marriage?

Also full names? Middle names were often used on the death records in New Zealand.

I cannot find any records specifically of Helen and George Rowe In NZ

I have found lots of George Rowes and lots of Helen Rowes, but none of them are together as a couple.

So in the 1861 Census in Cornwall - there is a family that might be the ones you want.

They are living in Vyvian Row in Parish of Camborne, Cornwall, and all born in Camborne
George Rowe, Head, married, age 40, Blacksmith
Mary Ann Rowe, wife, age 37
Thomas Pearce, son in law, age 17, unmarried, Miner
Charles Davey Pearce, son in law, age 14, Miner
Elizth Jane Pearce, daughter in law, age 11, Scholar
James Rowe, son, age 9, Scholar
Mary Ann Pearce, daughter in law, age 8, Scholar.

My reading of this would be that James is son of George by a previous marriage, and the Pearce children are the children of Mary Ann by a previous marriage and George's step children.  Cornwall OPC does have children by this name baptised in Camborne, children of William and Mary Ann Pearce.

 Couldn't find a marriage for George Rowe and Mary Ann Pearce in Cornwall OPC, but in FreeBMD there is a marriage registered in Dec 1855 in Redruth District (Camborne is in this district) between George Rowe and Mary Ann Pearse

It wouldn't be the first time that someone filling in a death certificate has got confused on some of the details and Pearce was the surname of his James, step-mother not his mother?

registrar may have had a lot of reported deaths to certify

and just glanced at the wrong one

it would have been winter

a lot of Australian soldiers were lost in the

battles of the Boer War that winter
