I am researching my 4th great-grandfather, John Williams.

Born 1758 in England Death ~1806 Franklin County GA

Two sons born in Virginia:  Amos , Sep 1777 (grave) and Louis Houston in 1785 (census in 1800s lists VA as his birthplace)

Fought in Revolutionary War and was present at surrender of British and Cornwallis at Yorktown in October, 1781 (per last will of his grandson)

Wins Georgia land grant in 1784 (document)

Appears on first tax list I can find in 1798 in Georgia.  Disappears from lists around 1808

There is a lot of conflicting information online and hoping to try and get more clarity.

Possible John Williams online with no official connection:

  • Born in St. Keverne, Cornwall, England
  • Born in Wedmore, Somerset, England to John Williams and Honor Hatch
  • Born in Goochland, VA

(I have no documentation to back up any of these.  I do not believe Goochland is correct bc he was Englishman.)

I have marriage records for John Williams and Honor Hatch in Wedmore in 1758, year he was born but no birth record of him.

** Hoping to find:

  • Any information tying him to Virginia between 1770 and 1790 (guessing tied to Amos or Louis Houston sons)
  • I believe his middle name was Louis and his wife's name was either Martha or Carolyn (based on naming of his sons first daughter, Mary Carolyn Williams.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Seth Williams
