Immigration and Naturalization Service in Rhode Island

My Great Great Grandfather Dennis McKenna became a U.S. citizen and I came across a reference to a Rhode Island Court.  He was born circa 1828 in Ireland and died in Providence, Rhode Island May 21, 1879.  I'm trying to find out where he was from in Ireland and hope there's a reference to this in the records.  I think his parents are James & Catherine McKenna.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I'm a newbie at this and have hit a wall.

The INS didn't exist before 1933. What you are looking for would typically be described just as an immigration record (i.e. ship passenger manifest at port of exit or entry) or a citizenship record.
