Hi there

Hoping someone could look up the marriage of Thomas Price who married Elizabeth Cotrell at Saint Marys Battersea in 1890?

I can see the record there in my search but my minimum Ancestry subscription doesn't allow me to see it.

It shows up at the top of the list in this search: https://www.ancestry.com.au/search/collections/1623/?name=thomas_price&count=50&marriage=1890_battersea-surrey-england-united+kingdom_85379&pcat=bmd_marriage&spouse=_cottle&qh=ed249e32058c6380236ff02814441ebb

I'm interested in who the parent details of Thomas Price, name occupation, et cetera

Thank you very much!

That top record isn't for the marriage, but for the readings of the Banns -- 21st, and 28th June 1885, and the 5th July, and the person who read them.

I'll see if I can find the subsequent marriage entry in the parish register.

Four of the six entries have date of marriage. This one doesn't,  though both parties were 'of this parish'. The marriage may not have taken place

As said above, the record is for the reading of the Banns and that was in 1885, not 1890.

Looking on Freebmd there is no marriage for an Elizabeth Cotrell/Thomas Price 1885-1895.  The nearest Elizabeth/Thomas Price marriage I could find was Q1 1890 Wandsworth district Thomas Price to Elizabeth Cottle.

Just to note that Battersea is in the Wandsworth district.

This is the one I found, as well.  I did wonder which of the two was the error, if either was.

Mark — do you have anything else you can tell us about this couple?  Were their children?  What were their names?  ANYTHING that might help us to help you.

So the full story is that I'm chasing down a weak DNA match, and I'm first verifying that their paper trail to a possible shared ancestor is legitimate.

They have a Thomas Price marrying an Elizabeth Alice Cottle on 16 March 1890. No location or source given, but they lived in Battersea so Wandsworth registration district is likely. This is the family in the 1911 Census. They have a birth registered to them at gro.gov.uk in 1888, but that doesn't preclude an 1890 marriage.

This Thomas was according to this tree born in 1863 in Battersea to Peter Price but this is dubious as he doesn't appear with his parents in the 1871 Census.

I haven't been able to find a birth record at gro.gov.uk with the right mother's maiden name which is another red flag. Not like I haven't found numerous cases of un or mis registered births over the years, but red flag nonetheless.

But to be thorough and to give the original tree creator the benefit of the doubt I'm looking for the marriage record of Thomas to learn his father's details.

Sorry I didn't give more detail, I thought this would be straightforward!

Thanks for your help and assistance.

According to the 1911 census the couple had been married for 25 years which suggests the 1890 marriage. They had 12 children, 8 of whom were still living. https://www.ancestry.co.uk/sharing/23754?token=6Mf%2FvTB7pn5%2FUxiEu4Ub36486ifxnz9WfuUaRnv5T%2BE%3D

This is them in the 1881 census.https://www.ancestry.co.uk/sharing/23776?token=%2BO70NNKRNfmoLp5gJLrMZQZA9Yubz7UALwXkkLJGPYY%3D

Mother in law Mary Ann Cottle  present name transcribed as Pottle BUT  brother in law, Alfred definitely Cottle. (Ancestry also gets Elizabeth's age wrong; 32 rather than 22 which means it gets missed on searches)

Both children are registered with a mothers maiden name of Cottle.

At the time, it wasn't necessary to show proof of marriage to register a birth  but it's a mystery as to  why it seems to have been  such a late marriage given that they already had a daughter registered under her father's surname

This may be her baptism in St George Hanover Square, Westminster in  1869 but born 1867 https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/61866/images/61865_324054000599_0282-00331?treeid=&personid=&hintid=&usePUB=true&usePUBJs=true&pId=2000886

If the Q1 1890 Wandsworth marriage between Thomas Price and Elizabeth Cottle is the right one, there are 9 civil births recorded between 1888 and 1905 who might be their children.

I don't know if this can help.
