I have come across a person in my family history research who is listed as being listed in Burke’s peerage and cannot figure out how to read the actual listing. Even the main Manchester library people couldn’t find it. His name was Malcolm Septimus Vaughan, and the reference says page 1571, ID number 15708. I am a novice at this; can anybody tell me how to see his listing? Many thanks, Kathy Ford

Hi Kathy

Welcome to WikiTree! You can find Malcolm Septimus Vaughan on website "The Peerage" here:
https://www.thepeerage.com/p1571.htm#i15708

15708 is his ID number on that website and the reference to Burke's Peerage is at the bottom of his entry.

Thank you for this, but I have seen that website entry and still can’t figure out how/why Malcolm is listed in Burke’s. I know he was awarded an MBE for service in WWII, but would that be considered nobility for being listed in Burke’s? I would really like to see what the lineage would have been but cannot find it. And advice how to do that?? Thanks, Kathy

He's probably in that website because his second wife has recent peerage ancestors https://www.thepeerage.com/p1571.htm#i15706

I would agree with Andrew. Looking at trees for Malcolm Septimus Vaughan on Ancestry, I can't see any connections to nobility for his parents, but I haven't taken the time to check these trees properly (they may not be accurate and may not go far enough back). I have added many profiles to WikiTree that have an entry at "The Peerage" and they are not from nobility but are related by marriage. Interestingly, once I started to build their ancestors, some of them did descend from nobility! If "The Peerage" has used Burke's Peerage (2003) as the source for Malcolm Septimus Vaughan and his father, Ernest Vaughan, then there probably is no further information in that publication beyond what is on "The Peerage" website. If you wanted to upgrade your WikiTree membership so that you can add their profiles, there are members who would be able to advise you further.
I do want to note that thepeerage(dot)com website, isn't a preferred main source per the England project.  At least, that is my understanding having done the orphan trail.  I think it's good as a jumping point, but I've always been asked to remove it. You'd want to find the original source the this website used instead.

If you search Malcolm Septimus Vaughan using Google under "Books," you'll get some snippet views that show him in the 1956 edition.  It's not great, but you can tell that the reference to him is as a husband, just like Sheryl posited.

Thank you to all who responded to my post about Malcolm Septimus Vaughan and how/why he is listed on the peerage.com site. I agree with the explanation is that the aspect of nobility in the family would be from that of his first wife, Judith Leveson-Gower, whose family goes way back with an Earl and several “Sirs”. I don’t know if the children of Malcolm and Judith could lay claim to nobility, but they (and Malcolm) would be related to my family via Malcolm’s mother, Cecilia Foster,  and Cecilia’s grandmother, Elizabeth Gleeson Foster of Limerick, Ireland. It’s been an interesting search, seeing where Elizabeth Gleeson’s children and descendants all went! Thank you, all. Kathy
