500px-Cemeterist_Project-2.pngHey Cemeterists, it's that time again! A May Cemetery Challenge is approaching fast - so grab your photos and get set - it's the Cemetery Photographers Challenge!

From Monday, May 22nd to Monday, May 29th we will dig into one of our harder challenges and add gravestone photographs to existing profiles!

  • The profile should not already have a gravestone photo;
  • All photographs must be original – either taken by you personally, or photos that you have permission to use (make sure to provide attribution (see examples)); and
  • A source must be added to the profile for the gravestone image (see examples).
Note: When you add the source citation, this is when you track your change to the Challenge Tracker.

Each existing profile on WikiTree that you add a gravestone image to counts as 1 point!

The best news is that you do not have to be a Cemeterist Project member with a hoard of images not yet uploaded to the tree in order to participate - so anyone can dive into the fun!

Need some ideas on how to participate? Head over to the Cemetery Categories and navigate down to the cemeteries in your local area. Once there, review the profiles that are listed as being interred in the cemetery, and if they don't have a gravestone photo, go take a photo and upload it to the profile!

cemetery_challenge.gifAt the end of the challenge, the participant with the most points will be awarded the coveted Cemetery Challenge Winner Badge!

Edit: The challenge has been extended to Memorial Day - Monday, May 29th.

I reviewed the models of photo source citations, but I'm not finding where to put them into the profile.

I'm going to the Images tab in the destination profile, then clicking the link to Add a Photo. This process asks for similar information as the models contain (such as date, place and why I'm allowed to use the photo). But at the end of this process. the image is uploaded to the profile without going through the usual Final Save process which would present the Challenge Tracker button in the banner upon completion.

I tried going back into the profile to edit the photo settings, but did not a place to paste in my version of the citation based the model.

Is the citation supposed to go into the text box in the profile? Please advise...thanks!
Hi Sally. The source citation and permissions to use for a photo normally go in the comment box which is available under "Enter the Source" on the Upload Image page, with an option to edit on the image page later. Sorry but I don't know how that relates to the Challenge Tracker.
Thanks for answering Jim! I'll look for that.  Now tested...no joy. Saving the citation in the Comments section within Images still doesn't present the normal Final Save banner. Therefore, no access to the Challenge Tracker button.

It relates to the Challenge Tracker because the normal Image add process doesn't present the usual Final Save banner, therefore no access to the Challenge Tracker button, contributions don't get counted for the challenge.

Thanks again!
Once you've done that go to the profile and add the photo as a source for death and then when you save you get the challenge tracker.
Thank you Judy!

So the solution does involve the Text area in the main part of the destination profile, essentially using the marker photo as an additional death record in the "regular" Source list.
Well that's I've done - like in this one... https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Goldsworthy-361

I have been intending to take more photographs for my One Place Study so will see who I have added that was buried there and has no headstone photograph yet.

That sounds great, Hillary! I need to get my camera out myself, so hopefully I will see you on the leaderboard next week if the rain storms will ever let up in Southeast Texas!
I have added a few today and taken some more photographs ready to upload when processed and profiles found.

There are several gravestones in my local cemetery that I've been meaning to photograph. This will give me that extra push to actually do it.

All it takes is a little push from time to time, right? Great to have you Laurie!

I will try to find enough time to drive to Alton and take some more grave pics, especially as my FILs stone including his parent's has just been engraved and put back in its spot at the cemetery.

We decided to add his parents to the inscription so future researchers would know who his parents were.

That is awesome M! I am sure future generations will be grateful for such a thoughtful contribution.

Great to have you join us!

I have a few photos I took while paying respects to my in-laws site.  I'll see if any are current profiles that I can add a photo to.

Would love to join in! My daughter & I have photographed 3 cemeteries in our area and working on more.  Unfortunately most don't have existing profiles on wikitree - one of the cemeteries isn't even listed!

I might be able to do a few. I already have such photos on many of my profiles.

It has rained every day, but I took over 200 photos in the Karoro Cemetery yesterday in between showers. They are on Billion Graves for anyone with profiles of persons buried there.

I would like to join this challenge too.  Riverside Cemetery in my town has graves belonging to several of my profiles, including my husband, mum and in-laws.

sorry but this process of adding a gravestone to this "contest" is simply TOO complicated ... mercy.

just give us a simply place to submit our photo  ... like here but this is too complex ...

sorry ...
by Dave McIntyre G2G1 (1.2k points)

Hi Dave, what is complex about the process?

  1. Add image to profile;
  2. Add Source citation / attribution and save;
  3. Click the Challenge Tracker Link to record your submission.
